VEX Desktop 0.4.2. Your keys. Your machine. Your agent.

A self-custodial AI agent for crypto that runs on your own computer, trades from wallets whose keys never leave it, and asks before it moves money unless you choose otherwise.

Model proposes. Runtime enforces. You decide.

Install and connectChapters

Install and connect

(01) Download, open, go.

Download VEX for macOS, Windows or Linux and open it. VEX includes the local software it runs on, so there is nothing else to install. To connect an AI model, choose Vex Inference or your own OpenRouter API key. Vex Inference runs the models and charges your VEX balance per request: sign in with the wallets already in VEX and deposit VEX from the app, with no API key. With OpenRouter you paste your own key and pay OpenRouter directly, with no $VEX needed. Vex Inference has been live in VEX Desktop since 0.4.2.
  • Open VEX. System Check measures your disk and memory first, and if there is not room for the model and the database, it tells you how much space it needs.
  • On first run VEX creates its local database and downloads the embedding model once, about 333 MB, checked against a pinned fingerprint before it is used.
  • Connect an AI model: choose Vex Inference and sign in with your wallets, then deposit VEX from the app; or paste your own OpenRouter API key and pay OpenRouter directly for what the models use.
  • Create your EVM and Solana wallets, or restore them from a backup. Set a master password. VEX writes a backup archive automatically.
  • Start a session: Agent or Mission, Restricted or Full Autonomous. The choice is fixed for that session.

What ships in the app: a PostgreSQL 18.6 database with pgvector 0.8.7 and a llama.cpp embeddings server running EmbeddingGemma 300M. No Docker. It runs on macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel, Windows x64 or Windows on Arm, and Linux x64. The first launch needs the internet once, for the model download. The database and the embeddings server listen only on 127.0.0.1, start when you open VEX and stop when you quit. The app must stay open: Desktop works only while it runs. Coming from a version that ran on Docker? Move my data copies your sessions, missions, memory and settings across in one click and checks the copy before VEX uses it.

KeysChapters

Keys

(02) Created and encrypted on your computer.

EVM and Solana keys are generated on your computer and stored in an encrypted vault (AES-256-GCM, scrypt N=2^17, r=8, p=1). The master password is held only in memory and asked again after every restart. VEX servers never hold your keys.
  • A backup archive is written automatically. You can export your wallets and restore them.
  • No hardware wallet support.
  • The code is source-available under the VEX Source-Available License v1.0, published so you can read and audit it.
ApprovalsChapters

Approvals

(03) What is signed, shown before it is signed.

Restricted, the default, asks before every action that moves money. The approval card shows the exact signed arguments, the VEX fee and a safety verdict from VEX's own check, never model text.
  • Approvals expire after 1 hour.
  • Slippage is 1% by default, with a hard cap of 10%.
  • Even in Full Autonomous, a price-and-safety check no older than 15 minutes from the same venue is required, and every send goes through prepare, then confirm.
  • Full Autonomous Agent sessions have no mission contract. The wallets you attach are the only limit.

VEX fees depend on the operation. See the fee table for current rates and operations with no VEX fee. Model costs are separate.

Run your agent on your own machine.

Nothing else to install: since v0.4.1 the local software ships in the app. Pay for its AI in VEX with Vex Inference, or bring your own OpenRouter API key and pay OpenRouter directly.
